Three Archive Options: Three Horsemen of the Apocalypse

I have to pick one of these three spreads for Archive.

The Art Student would say,"Fuck'm. You got to show something cool. Show the blurry head."
The rep/consultant would say,"You must show images that look like advertising. Something they can relate to. Show the family image"
Archibald/Other photographers say, "The family shot is too commercial and I am not feeling the blurry head. The woman in the jungle looks beautiful. Show that. "

The Presidio image is an interesting location, but not a very interesting photo. It doesn't say anything. The group/family portrait also doesn't bring anything to the fore- it's been done and it doesn't speak to your skills or point of view. The Cal Academy shot is interesting because it draws you in- you want to know more about this person and this location. At the same time you're not sure if it's real or manufactured.

Go with the third image for sure.

Not an art student or account exec, nor a big-time shooter. I like all three, but in order I would put jungle at first and 'shire' at second. Jungle pic seems to have the mystery that would call the viewer to spend a moment. The shire is a shot that folks may think they see, or have seen somewhere, and pass it by. it is a good shot, but requires a moment of contemplation. The jungle shot has the fog that demands the moment of challenge.

When thinking about a submission in a mag as full of images as Archive, one must use the full power of the image to capture the eye of a passive reader.

Just my buck3eighty...

BLURRY HEAD!!!!

The family portrait shot only really works with the tagline. Also, Archive doesn't seem to be full of images that 'look like advertising'.

I think there's something to the shire photograph, but I don't think it's fully developed - there may be more photos coming that are more self-contained, or will strengthen this one.

The jungle is not only beautiful but also strange - just where is this combination of architecture and plant?

Tough decision is a good problem to have. Love to see the shire image with the bottom right hand corner and the bottom burned down to remove some distraction. (Logo would also pop a little more) That being said I would still opt for the Cal Academy.

Actually it is the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse: Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death. I choose Famine. But hey, what do I know, I am just the wife.

I do think there is something of "taking your temperature in someone else's mouth" going on here. You know which image to choose.

Shire has potential but is not fully there yet.

Family shot: Vanilla you are not.

That would leave... jungle.

And whatever Mrs. B says, stay away from my mouth.

Jungle

I like the shire image for the coolness factor (and I happen to be an aspiring art student).

I wonder what the passionate artist working as a commercial photographer (a.k.a. Thomas Broening) would say. If I've learned anything from reading your blog, it that you have to stay true to yourself and your own vision.

P.S. - listen to your wife on this one.

i'd say jungle, though the blurry head shot is pretty cool, too.

the blurry head just reminds me of too many heavy metal music videos from the 90's.

maybe you could also squeak in a gurney wheel shot real low going down a dank hallway...

thats what blurry head says to me. Or CA from the 80's.

jungle is so much better.

hmmm.... jungle doesn't look like you had much to do with anything, other than show up and pull a trigger within a cool museum. Shire..... have anything without the blurry head, something where the subject is worthy of interest? Location, lighting, composition is great. Family then.... because where else would you rather be?

Clearly the Jungle is the right choice.

the real question is: who actually CALLS from an Archive ad, if you're not a photographer in Europe? is this money well spent? having said that, jungle is by far my favorite image, and a very nice one.

Jungle for sheezy.

I agree with the first anon re: the presidio shot. The location is pretty sweet... the content... well, so so.

What are you trying to say with it? What emotion are you looking for? It's a little bland... but still has potential location wise I'd say.

Watch out for the permit police out there in the ol Presidio...

Oh yeah, and to the anon above, it's not about getting a call directly from placing a single ad. It's about having a continuous presence in the industry...

Then you get the call.

chirp.

Wow TB you're bangin the comments here! Jungle, but lets stop calling it that.

Jungle!

I wish the shire had no blurry head, just a static subject. But since it doesn't I say jungle.

Remember Archive originally started as an European magazine with all euro ads and paid ads. now days it seems to be half euro, half US, but either way, far more entertaining and inspiring than CA anyday.

given the more open minded euro audience, i'd go with the most fun shot possible. the family is great for CA, the ivy or sunset mag shot for archive, i'd prefer the latter. or the classic consultant line, 'show what you want to shoot'.
